The Aprilaire 4004 strainer screen is installed on the inlet side of the solenoid valve. The purpose of the strainer screen is to filter out sand and other particulate matter which might get into the solenoid valve and clog it. The screen should be replaced every two to three years.
The manufacturer is sometimes referred to as April Aire, Aprilair, April Air but is correctly spelled Aprilaire.

Aprilaire 4004 Strainer Screen by John Steffen (Belleville IL US)
Strainer was exactly what I needed and easy to install for a novice. It seems to be made of the same material, and is exactly like the original one I replaced. Can't comment on the quality of the product until I check it out next year.

Worked perfectly on a 55 year old humidifier!!

The old strainer's holes were partially blocked. The new one allows more water through; our weather station indicates that the indoor humidity is up significantly(it was borderline low before).

The strainer screen is a very straightforward switch out for the existing original screen. Can't remember precisely, but I believe this original unit was acquired when the HVAC system was replaced in 2004. Might want to inquire as to the longevity under normal use and recommend replacement at particular intervals. I first sought assistance through my HVAC service contract, only to find that the humidifier was not covered by the contract, yet the unit was installed as part of the HVAC replacement. I was quoted a price of service visit $99.00, then the part(s) cost, plus the labor cost. After all is taken into account this could easily have been $250 or more. And I already had opened the cover to the unit to see if there was anything that I could access to make sure the unit was providing the moisture to the house. I found the snap connection holding the screen in place, as well as the nozzle replacement simple as could be. Thanks for making it consumer friendly, you have to be able to save pennies where you can around the home.

filter for Aprilaire and Straner Screen by Michael Koch (New Blookmfield MO US)
The strainer screen that goes in line is a problem for me. When I twist the in line water tap it leaks and does not shut off. Is it necessary for me to shut the water off for the entire house to insert the strainer screen inline before the solenoid? Thanks!

I received the new strainer and installed it with no problems. A lime deposit was also removed and the humidifier is now working perfectly. Thank you for your interesst.
Little part, big help by Greg Mitchell (Milwaukee WI US)
The replacement strainer is more substantial than the fabric strainer it replaced in my humidifier. When I removed the old screen, I found it had been blown open at the end, allowing a small piece of sediment to hold the solenoid vavle open (and wasting who knows how much water). The new screen is hard, perforated plastic, which I expect will plug instead of disintegrate when full - a much more acceptable failure mode for a filter in my opinion, at least on systems that depend on that filtration to protect downstream components.

Strainer Screen Replacement by ( )
Replace the strainer screen if you do not have a full steady stream of water from the hose that feeds the water panel. The screen is extremely small but an important part of the system to work properly. The screen in located on the inlet side of the water valve.
